Pavel Zavalnyj, chairman of Congress's energy committee, said at a press conference last Thursday that Russia was open to accept bitcoin for the export of natural resources, starting with natural gas, depending on the preferred payment method of the buyer. However, the chairman said that the conditions would depend on the status of the importing country's foreign relations with Russia. The landslide statement follows Wednesday's statement by President Vladimir Putin, who demanded that "hostile" countries pay Russian rubles for rubles. Putin's message was clear, but it is not clear whether Russia can unilaterally change existing contracts agreed in euros.
